Cozy BBQ

03.05.10

There’s nothing like good ol’ BBQ to make you yearn for some carefree summer days. At Beach Bit BBQ in Costa Mesa, you can capture that feeling and eat it on a plate, too. The adorable eatery blends in almost perfectly with the picturesque homes around 17th Street. A quaint white picket fence surrounds the red cottage-like restaurant, with a screen door to boot. Our favorite at Beach Pit BBQ is the tri-tip steak sandwich: generous slices of tender tri-trip slathered with a tangy (but not too sweet) BBQ sauce all tucked in a fluffy potato bread bun. Must-order sides: the blueberry cornbread, sweet potato fries and fried okra. Don’t forget to sit outside at any of the picnic-style wooden tables.

Great daily and weekly specials, too: $10 lunch (sandwich, fries and fountain drink) during the week and all-you-can-eat ribs on Wednesdays, plus more.

Beach Pit BBQ is located at 1676 Tustin Ave (nearest cross street is 17th Street) in Costa Mesa

A Must-See Film for Parents

03.02.10

As a mom of four boys, I definitely want to see the screening of a controversial new documentary, “Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture” this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Studio at Sage Hill. “Race to Nowhere” chronicles the pressures American schoolchildren and their teachers face in our achievement-obsessed education system and culture. The film has generated tremendous buzz through screenings at public and private schools across the US. Friday night’s screening is open to the public and will be followed by a discussion with the Director, Vicki Abeles. Tickets are expected to sell out in advance and are available here.  The Studio at Sage Hill is located at 20402 Newport Coast Drive, Newport Coast CA 92657.
